How to Build a Brick Retaining Wall Before Ground Freezes

As soon as the weather starts to cool, we know it’s time to start planning any hardscaping jobs that need to be done before winter slows everything down. Building a brick retaining wall late in the fall can be done, but it takes some planning and good timing. The biggest challenge is that dropping temperatures can harden the ground or make soil too unstable to work with. Once it gets too cold, frozen ground can stall digging, push walls out of place, or crack unfinished sections. If we wait too long, we miss the window and may be stuck until spring.

That’s why it makes sense to start early. By getting ahead of the first deep frost, we give ourselves the best shot at laying a solid foundation and locking everything in before weather becomes a problem. A brick retaining wall can hold back soil, reshape a yard, and add structure to garden beds, but it needs to start with solid steps while conditions are still workable. Planning well now will save us time, money, and frustration when colder days set in.

Choosing the Right Spot and Preparing the Ground

Where we put the wall can make or break the project. The right location will offer gentle slope, easy drainage, and enough space to dig a solid base. Avoid areas where water pools or where roots are likely to be a problem. If we’re near trees or old plant beds, it’s worth taking extra time to dig those out first so nothing interferes with the future structure.

Once we pick the spot, ground prep matters just as much:

• Clear all surface debris, roots, or plant matter so that nothing gets trapped beneath the wall

• Rake the area and mark the wall path with string or paint for a clear visual guide

• Use a long level or board to double-check any slopes or dips and help set your plan

It’s easier to adjust layout lines now than later. And if we can dig before the soil goes hard, we won’t be wrestling with frozen dirt when it’s time to build. Good prep keeps everything smooth, while rushing risks uneven walls or sections that may move over time.

Gathering the Right Materials Early

Fall is a good time to stock up on supplies, especially with holidays and late-season weather slowing down deliveries. Before we start building, we’ll need a few basics:

• Bricks or blocks made for structural use

• Base gravel or crushed rock to form a strong base

• Wall adhesive or mortar made for outdoor projects

Once these items show up, don’t leave them sitting out. Bricks should be stacked on pallets and covered to keep them dry. Adhesives should be stored off the ground, preferably indoors, to stop them from freezing or hardening. Gravel can be bagged or tarped if left outside to control wetness. The earlier we get materials in hand, the less we risk hold-ups from rain or cold snaps. Gathering now also lets us spot any shortages before work begins.

Building the Foundation for Long-Term Strength

Getting the trench and base right lays the groundwork for everything that follows. This is the part where patience really pays off. Start by digging a trench that’s about twice as wide as each brick and deep enough to hold four to six inches of gravel plus the first brick layer. Taking a little extra time here helps everything stay solid and level.

Here’s how we usually build it out:

1. Dig the trench evenly along the layout line, keeping depth consistent

2. Pour in base gravel and tamp it down flat so it won’t shift later

3. Use a level to confirm the base is even side to side and front to back for stable stacking

If we rush or skip a step here, the wall can shift or sink later. Cold weather only makes it harder to fix those mistakes, so it’s smart to get this part done while we still have decent ground conditions. A strong foundation locks bricks in place and prevents movement, especially when soil freezes and thaws throughout late fall and winter.

Laying and Securing the Bricks Before the Freeze

Once the foundation is in place, it’s time to start stacking. We begin with the first row directly into the base trench, taking care to level each brick as we go. Keep the lines tight, especially if using adhesive, to stop shifting when temperature swings hit. Building steadily with extra attention to each layer makes the final wall stronger and more reliable.

For strong and steady stacking:

• Use a staggered or running bond pattern to spread weight and avoid long vertical joints

• Gap bricks slightly if using adhesive, then press firmly together for a solid hold

• Check levels every few rows for clean, flat lines so the wall looks neat and stays straight

When we finish building up the wall, the last layer (called capstones) gets placed at the very top. These help protect what’s beneath and keep everything in place. Before we walk away, we’ll backfill behind the wall with loose gravel to reduce pressure from soil. Finishing steps like this help stop water buildup, which can lead to cracks during freeze-thaw cycles and protect the wall as winter rains come.

Why Timing Makes All the Difference

Once the ground freezes, building slows down. Digging becomes nearly impossible, and adhesives might stop curing the way they should. Even if we push through, winter weather can shift materials, move soil, or damage layers that aren’t fully set yet. It ends up causing more work and often leads to walls that don’t last as long.

Planning ahead gives us more than just a head start. It protects our time, our effort, and the materials we’ve already invested in. Starting early means we avoid the problems that come from rushing or working in stressful conditions. A well-timed start in late fall means fewer setbacks, clean edges, and no surprises when spring comes around. Whether we’re holding back soil on a sloped yard or defining space in a small garden, getting the job done before winter hits keeps everything stronger and simpler.
